Any activities of people acting legally on behalf of the public or organizations to protect society
Justice
Fair treatment and protection
Equality
All citizens are protected and receive equal access to justice
Accountability
actions are subject to review

their job is done correctly and timely and with minimal amounts of money
Social contract
The perspective that the police are a politically neurtral party that protects the rights of the people
Radical perspective
The perspective that the police are an instrument of those in power to help maintain the stats quo in society and forward the ideas of those in power
Structure
The police is structure is divided into RCMP, Provincial police, municipal police, and Indigenous police.
RCMP
Police that work for the RCMP and enforce legislative and federal acts. They are all across canada and can be contracted out to do provincial policing
Provincial Police
Police that often work regionally in rural areas and enforce provincial and criminal code. They are found in Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland
Municipal police
Police that act within the city boundaries and enforce the criminal code, provincial statures, and bylaws
Indigenous Police
Police that is integrated into the community and receive special training to best suit the needs of the Band and work within the Band. They are typically RCMP or provincial officers
Divisions of urban policing
operational control, investigation, support, administrative, HR, and research
Police responsibility to society
Police are responsible for protecting the public, but there is many tensions between them.
Police and society tensions
Mistrust, over dependance of the public, religious and racial tenisons, and when can they enforce the laws.
