Chapter 5 Flashcards
How can pesticides be harmful?
by doing the exact thing intended for the pest such as disrupting our nervous systems
Define Risk
a pesticides potential to cause you harm
influenced by toxicity and exposure
Define Toxicity
a measure of its ability to cause harm
a property of the active ingredients, concentration, and formulation
Define Exposure
when you get pesticides in or on you
acute= one exposure
chronic= many exposures
toxicity is independent of its source
how does dose and time relate
the strength of the formulation and amount (dose) increases risk as it increases and the amount of times the person is exposed to the dose also increases the exposure
Influences on why people differ in their susceptibility to toxins
Weight
Age -youngest and oldest
Gender
Health Conditions
Environment-exposure to other chemicals may increase susceptibility
Four ways pesticides enter the body
Eyes- Absorbed through blood vessels, wear goggles to protect against overspray or splashing chemicals
Skin(dermal)- absorbed through skin into blood vessels, wear gloves and approved full body suit when handling or spraying pesticides to cover skin from exposure
Oral(ingestion)- absorbed through ingestion, comes from not washing hands and eating or touching mouth or pesticide drifting into mouth, cover mouth and wear gloves
Inhalation- from poor ventilation, wear a mask
where on the label can you find precautions
in the precautionary statements
how do other people become exposed
through eating pesticide covered food
inhaling fumes
touching treated surfaces
