What is the difference between stereotyping and oppression?

A

Stereotyping is where a person is pre-judging someone and making assumptions that may not be true. Oppression is where people disempower others and make them feel less. Interpreters can harm deaf consumers because they can hold the power to oppress them

Q

What is the harm of reciprocity of perspective for an interpreter?

A

Reciprocity of perspective is where an individual sees the world in their own frames and assuming others are just like them. This can harm interpreters because they wont be able to understand the consumer’s perspective. They will continue to have a closed mind.

Q

How might an interpreter oppress a deaf or hearing client?

A

An interpreter holds the power because they are providing the communication access across to the consumer. If they use that power wrong, they can oppress the consumer because in this case they may feel less since they don’t have the communication access. Another way an interpreter can oppress is if they are closed minded and dont take their lense and put it onto the consumer’s perspective.

A

It is important to be able to understand deaf people’s perspective because it allows the interpreter to have an open mind, to cause no oppression and much more. it allows them to move their lense to their consumer’s lense.
