Culture may be complex, but what creates a culture and how does the Deaf researchers/educators see the meaning of culture?
Knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, laws and customs. It is learning about a set of behaviors of a group of people who have their own language, values, rules of behavior, and traditions.
What are the three subsets of norm and value that divide up culture?
Material (ex: food, clothing, etc.), behavioral (rules), and cognitive (behavior learned and developed as a child).
How do culture and language share a relationship?
They both com in contact when communicating with others. Culture can be a silent participant in any interaction being made. (understanding their own cultural frames and those they communicate with).
World cultures can be divided into what two categories?
collectivist and individualist
What creates a cultural identity?
It is how a person defines themselves. religion can define them, gender, race, etc.. (identities can affect one’s perspective on multiple things)
Individuals unconsciously do what when brining in their cultural and group memberships?
They act and react unconsciously upon their own expectations (interpersonal exchanges and cultural frames).
What is the significance in an effective communication for cultural setting for an interpreter?
Being able to identify our own cultural identity and group membership. Also on how it can influence expectations in communicating. (learning more of the world view and cultural norms of others).
What do interpreters effectively need to do when communicating?
They need to identify and properly represent the various cultural frames and filters that are influencing the communication
Why is culture important for an interpreter?
Culture is important because it helps navigating an understanding towards different perspectives from others. It can influence your work and being conscious of how you react or act.
How might an interpreter learn about diverse cultures?
Being able to go through experiences, having exposure to different cultures, learning, and having an open mind. Being able to understand different perspectives will allow the interpreter to have a better understanding in different views and reactions.
