In what two levels can communication be interpreted?
The literal (denotative) and the deep structure (connotative). Depending on one’s frame of view, each word can be interpreted in different ways.
Can people have more than one culture?
person can have their foot in mainstream society and the other in familial culture.
Why should interpreters not make assumptions on deaf individuals with their culture?
Many deaf individuals can have a variety of identities within their cultures and not belong to one.
Why is it important to know/have the appropriate attire to wear and background during an interpreting assignment?
The deaf consumers can visually see the signs clear and reduces eyestrain during interpreting assignments.
Interpreters need to develop culturally appropriate greeting and leave-taking skills, why?
To be able to understand each others background, respect, trust, and develop the interpersonal frame. It’s important to arrive early to the appointment and spend some time with the deaf consumer to know who they are. (building that relationship)
What is one communication norm an interpreter needs?
To be able to produce an interpretation in a visually accessible way for the consumers. That way they can visualize the information instead of the interpreter signing word per word (drop form).
Why is it important to know the differences in cultures?
Interpreters should have exposure and learning sources to different cultures. They must understand each culture is different, communication style can be different, perspectives, and more. It is important to understand what is expected and accepted by those members.
Why is it important to understand the norms in cultures?
Being able to understand the norms in cultures can help an individual by respecting each other, have knowledge on how things work within their culture, and what to avoid doing.
Multiple people can identify themselves as deaf or hard of hearing, but what is different from all of them?
Their culture, identity, beliefs and much more. Although they may have a similarity but they all identify/view themselves differently from one another.
Being an interpreter can be complex, but having the tools with you can what?
Make you a better communicator. An interpreter can produce an interpretation well when having all the tools with them. Although there is room to always improve, an interpreter can understand all point of views of what is being expected and accepted by the community.
