CHAPTER 47 – ANTIINFLAMMATORY AND IMMUNOMODULATING DRUGS Flashcards
Jordan, a 50 year old, has recently taken up running to improve his fitness. He is currently being treated for mild hypertension with Perindopril (5mg/day) and apart from being slightly overweight, he is generally in good health. His fitness routine is sporadic and he runs 1-2 times weekly for about 2-4 km. On Sunday he collapsed while out running a 10km race in 34*C heat. The attending paramedic noticed that Jordan was sweating profusely and she (the paramedic) ascertained that Jordan skipped breakfast and had not collected any water from any of the drinking stations. Jordan was complaining of dizziness, nausea and feeling thirsty. On examination his BP was 106/65 and Jordan advised that he had taken his Perindopril that morning

- What is the most likely explanation for Jordan collapsing?
.• Dehydration
• Not having eaten breakfast
• Perindopril would lower his blood further
Jordan was supplied with 500ml sport drink, which he drank immediately. He then told the paramedic the he had taken some of his wife’s ANTIINFLAMMATORY drugs proceeding 2 days as he strained a muscle in his leg. He recalled that the drug was called ’Naprosyn’ and he had also taken 2 tablets in the morning before the race. On hearing this information, the paramedic advised Jordan that they would go to the hospital for a check up.
