Chapter 4.2 Flashcards
Wave
A disturbance that travels in a medium transferring energy and momentum from one place to another. The direction of propagation is the direction of energy transfer. There is no large-scale motion of the medium itself
Wavelength
The length of a complete oscillation
Crest
The highest point on a wave
Trough
The lowest point on a wave
What does the speed of a wave depend on?
The properties of the medium only, and not on how it is produced
Transverse wave
A wave whose displacement is at right angles to the direction of energy transfer
What two pieces of information can be obtained from a displacement-distance graph?
The amplitude of the wave and its wavelength
What two pieces of information can be obtained from a displacement-time graph?
The amplitude of the wave and its period
Longitudinal wave
A wave whose displacement is parallel to the direction of energy transfer
Compression
A region of higher than normal density
Rarefaction
A region of lower than normal density
Electromagnetic wave
A wave that has an oscillating electric and magnetic field at right angles to each other
