Chapter 4 Vocab Flashcards
Equilibrium
If births plus immigration are more or less equal to deaths plus emigration over time
Population Growth
The change in population number, represented by(Births + Immigration)-(Deaths+Emigration)=Population Growth
Carrying Capacity
The maximum population of a species that a given habitat can support without the habitat being degraded over the long term
Biotic Potential
The rate at which members of a species reproduce, if unlimited.
Recruitment
Survival through early growth stages to become part of breeding population
Environmental Resistance
Combination of biotic and abiotic factors that may limit population increase
Type I Survivor Curve
good early survival and die of old age(Humans)
Type III Survival Curve
Poor early survival, survival improves with age
Population Density
The Number of individuals per unit area
Limiting Factor
A factor that causes population growth to decrease
Density Dependent
A limiting factor that depends on population size
Density independent
Affect all populations in similar ways regardless of the population size
Competitive Exclusion Principle
States that no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at the same time
Critical Number
The lowest population for survival and recovery
Non-feeding Symbiosis
Simply means two organisms living together
