Chapter 4 Textbook :) Flashcards
Nervous system
Communication network and control centre of the body - Brain, spinal cords & nerves
Central nervous system - CNS
Brain and Spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system - PNS
Nerves connect to the CNS with receptors, muscles and glands
Cranium
Part of the skull that houses the brain
Vertebral canal
Opening in the vertebrae to protect the spinal cord.
Meninges
Connective tissues forming membranes
Dura Mater
Outer meningeal layer - tough and durable. Provides layer of protection to brain - close to skull.
Arachoid mater
Middle Meningeal layer - loose mesh of fibers (cobweb)
Pia Mater
Inner Meningeal layer - Delicate and contians blood vessles and sticks to brain
Cerebrospinal fluid - CSF
Occupies space between middle and inner layers of meninges, and also circulates through cavities in breain and through canal in spinal cord.
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain - contains grey matter, white matter and basal ganglia
Grey matter / Cerebral cortex
Neron cell bodies, dendrites and anmyelinated axons.
White matter.
Myelinated axons
Grey matter under white
Additional grey matter called basal ganglia
Convolutions / gyrus / gyri
Outer ridges in brain folds
