Chapter 4 Science Vocab Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
The diffusion of water through cell membrane is so important to life process that it has been given a special name Osmosis.
What is Diffusion?
Particles travel from where they are crowded to when they are less crowded. This movement from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
What is passive transport?
The movement of particles across a cell membrane without the use of energy by the cell.
What is active transport?
A process of transporting particles that requires the cell to use energy.
What is exocytosis?
when large particles, such as wastes, leave the cell, the cell uses an active-transport process.
What is photosynthesis?
plants capture energy from the sun and change it into food through a process.
What is cellular respiration?
animals cells have different ways of getting energy from food. One way is cellular respiration that uses oxygen to break down food.
What is fermentation?
many feels can get energy without using oxygen though a process.
What is cell cycle?
the life cycle of a cell.
What is chromosomes?
the DNA of a cell is organized into structures.
What is homologous chromosomes?
these pairs are made up to similar chromosomes known as homologous chromosomes.
What is mitosis?
the complicated process by which chromosomes condense and separate.
What is cytokinesis?
the division of cytoplasm. It’s also the last step of the cell cycle.
