What does the lower respiratory system include?

The purpose of the respiratory system is to?
Bring oxygen into the body and expel carbon dioxide.
What body part does DD (Double Duty)?
The pharynx or throat.
It helps in the gastrointestinal system and in the respiratory system.
The mucosa membrane in your nose does what?
Moistens the air and produces mucus.
What is the purpose of mucus?
Mucus and hairs in the nose trap inhaled particles of dust, pollen, smoke, and bacteria and keep them from entering the lungs.
The nasal cavity merges with what?
The pharynx
What does the larynx do?
It remains open during respiration to allow air to passthrough the vocal cords.
What is the trachea?
A passageway for air. It is flexible and can be flattened to make room when a large amount of food is swallowed.
Bronchi contains what?
Cartilage rings for support.
The bronchial tree is lined with what?
Lined with cilia, small hairs that move in waves to move mucus and trapped particles to the throat.
What are lungs?
Spongy, air filled structures that contains lobes.
Which lung is larger?
The right lung.
What is the alveolus?
A hollow sphere of cells that expands and contracts with each breath.
