Subclass Branchiura:
Majority of the Branchiura are ectoparasites of fish (freshwater and marine ecosystems) a few species parasites amphibians. Commonly known as fish.
Branchiura: 4 genres. Most common genus:
Argulus
**Argulus species: Not host-specific
Are of economic importance as parasites of farmed fish and high value cultures fish such as koi carp**.
Female Argulus lays its eggs.
Fish farmers use pesticides (such as ivermectin) in order to reduce the abundance of branchiurans
Subclass Pentastomida -
tongue worms
All pentastomes are parasitic: ‘Pentastoma’ translates as
‘five mouths.’
Subclass Pentastomida characteristic
1) adult worm = no jaw
2) 0ver 100 species (most parasitic to lungs, nasal during their adult stage)
3) **Pentastome grow referred to as ‘tongue worms’ from shape of the adult form
4) intermediate host consume eggs depending on the pentastome species
