Q

How does a synapse work?

A
  1. An electrical impulses travels along an axon
  2. This triggers the nerve ending of a neurone to release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters
  3. These chemicals diffuse across the synapse (gap) and binds with receptor molecules on the membrane of the next neurone
  4. The receptor molecules on the second neurone binds to the specific chemicals released from the first neurone
  5. This stimulates the second neurone to transmit the electrical impulse
