Chapter 4 - Nervous System Flashcards
What is the role of the nervous system?
To sense your surroundings and protect you from danger
What is the CNS?
Central Nervous System - brain, spine
What is the PNS?
Peripheral Nervous System - senses
What is the order from stimulus to brain?
Stimulus –> receptor –> sensory neurone –> brain
What types of energy are at each part?
Stimulus: light energy
Receptor: light energy to electrical energy
Sensory neurone: electrical energy
Brain: electrical energy
What are the three types of neurones?
- Sensory
- Relay
- Motor
What is the job of the sensory neurone?
Carries impulses from receptors to spinal cord
What is the job of the relay neurone?
Carries implies in the spinal cord
What is the job of the motor neurone?
Carries impulses from spinal cord to effectors
What does STORM stand for?
SENSORY to RELAY to MOTOR
How does a synapse work?
- An electrical impulses travels along an axon
- This triggers the nerve ending of a neurone to release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters
- These chemicals diffuse across the synapse (gap) and binds with receptor molecules on the membrane of the next neurone
- The receptor molecules on the second neurone binds to the specific chemicals released from the first neurone
- This stimulates the second neurone to transmit the electrical impulse
