Chapter 3 - Immune System Flashcards
1
Q
What do antibodies do?
A
- Stick to antigens on pathogens to destroy them
2. Remember the antigen so next time the pathogen is fought of more easily
2
Q
Name 2 types of white blood cell? And their jobs?
A
- Phagocyte - produces false arms (psuedopoda)
2. Lymphocyte - sends out antibodies
3
Q
Define pathogen?
A
A microorganism that causes disease
4
Q
What are some physical barriers to pathogens?
A
- Mucus (lungs)
- Cilia (lungs)
- Acid (stomach)
- Ear wax (ears)
- Sebum (skin)
- Lysosyme (eyes)
5
Q
How do vaccines work?
A
- Injects dead or weakened (inactive) pathogens into body
- White blood cells produce antibodies to fight pathogen
- White blood cells remember the pathogen and antibodies needed to fight it
- When/if re-infected there is a rapid response and the antibodies fight the re-infection faster than you feel the symptoms
