clause
a sentence within a sentence (316)
interrogative clause
Normally used to ask questions. Can be interpreted as directives or as a rhetorical question depending on intonation.
declarative clause
Usually interpreted as a statement. Usually display an unmarked ie expected order of functional categories Subj, Predicator, DO etc. e.g. I have picked flowers.
imperative clause
Usually interpreted as directive. Do not contain a Subject.
exclamative clause
Usually interpreted as exclamation. Like open interrogatives are usually formed with an initial wh-word. e.g. What a state you are!
dominate
On a syntax tree, the nodes on top dominate the nodes below.
immediately dominate
On a syntax tree, the node on top immediately dominates the node directly underneath and branching from it.
finite/nonfinite clause
If a clause contains a finite/nonfinite verb, it is a finite/nonfinite clause.
main clause
Superordinate clauses that are not themselves subordinate to any other clause. 52
matrix clause
A clause which contains a subordinate clause w/i it. 53
