Chapter 4 - Material Safety Data Sheet And Fire Safety Flashcards
What are hazardous chemicals?
Hazardous chemicals are substances that are falling in the category of explosive, flammable, harmful, irritant, corrosive and toxic.
What could the exposure to hazardous chemicals cause?
From skin allergies and irritations, to long term illnesses like cancer.
Who is required to follow the basic principles of handling Hazmat?
All those who are involved in storing, handling, and transporting hazardous materials.
What are the basic principles of handling hazardous chemicals (Hazmat)?
- Assess the risk present in the workplace.
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for handling situations of spills, leakage or exposure.
- More proper plans for the potential hazards.
- Use of PPE is mandatory and keep the ventilation hoods in well maintained.
- Ensure that all hazardous materials are identified properly and the hazmat containers labelled.
- All hazmat containers must be kept in cool ventilated uncluttered places.
- Hazardous materials must be used fir the intended purpose only.
- Always wash hands after using hazardous materials and never consume food or drink while using them.
- Conduct periodic inspection on the containers to look for possible spills or leaks.
- Employees must be provided adequate training about handling the hazmat.
- Employees must refer to the labels on hazmat containers and understand what they are handling and shall access the MSDS prior to the usage of it.
What is the primary purpose of the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1200?
OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.1200 promulgates the need of communicating the potential hazards to the employees and general public who might get exposed to hazardous chemicals by labelling the containers that include the harmful effects and prevention and protection practices.
What is Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
MSDS is the main form of communication the supplier provides including name of manufacturer and contact details, hazardous ingredients, physical characteristics, chemical characteristics, fire hazard data, explosion hazard data, reactivity data, health hazard data, precautions, sate handling procedure and control measures.
What is another name for MSDS?
Chemical Safety Data Sheet (CSDS).
How many sections if OSHA standards are there in MSDS?
16 sections.
What is fire?
Fire is a combustion chemical reaction where the combustible material reacts with oxygen to produce heat and carbon dioxide.
What does fire form on top of heat and carbon dioxide?
Smokes containing particulates and carbon monoxide and other products of combustion.
What is the fire triangle?
Fire needs fuel, oxygen and source of energy to ignite to start and sustain.
How to control fire?
Controlling the fire could possibly be done by removing any one of these elements:
- Removal of the source of ignition (Cooling)
- Controlling the fuel supply (Starving)
- Smothering (Blanketing)
Explain the following fire control method:
1. Removal of the source of ignition.
Ignition sources are friction, hot surfaces, electricity, static electricily, smoking etc. Cooling is the most common type of fire extinguishing in this type due to the high latent heat of vapourization and thermal copocily and also its eosy availability.
Explain the following fire control method:
2. Starving.
Starving is done by removal of fuel or cutting the fuel supply. Examples are draining of fuel from tanks, removing vehicles from the proximity of fire, removing tyres from the warehouse, creaking firebreak pits in forests, removing cargo from ships etc.
Explain the following fire control method:
3. Smothering.
It is done by cutting OFF oxygen from the nearby surrounding atmosphere. Insufficient oxygen supply will cause the fire to reduce and ceose later. Examples are using a fire blanket, using sand buckets, using carbon dioxide etc.
