-art nouveau dominated architecture and applied arts from the 1890’s until roughly 1906 -leading designer was Henry van de Velde from Belgium -line was perceived as something that could be abstract, symbolic, ornamental, or structural. -was both an artistic style, a decorative style, and an architectural style: art nouveau was a useable art form -heavy influence on advertising, especially through posters
