health literacy
the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.
learning
acquiring knowledge or skill. Can result in persistent change in a person as a result of an experience.
learning needs
new knowledge and skills that an individual must have to be able to meet a goal.
positive reinforcement
rewarding target behavior with positive feedback or other rewards to maintain the behavior. It is a critical element in the change process.
self-efficacy
belief in ability to successfully cope with and manage a situation and the confidence in the ability to change.
teaching
a process of deliberately arranging condition to promote learning that results in a change in behavior. Can be planned or an incidental experience.
teaching plan
includes (1) assessment of the patient’s ability, need, and readiness to learn and (2) identification of problem that can be resolved with teaching.
teaching process
involve the development of a plan that includes assessment, diagnosis, setting patient goals/outcomes, intervention and evaluation.
