What are the 3 levels of government in our country?
local, state, national
The local, state and national governments are each divided into what?
executive, legislative and judicial branches
A Mayor is a leader of
a local community (Executive Branch)
A Council is a group
that makes laws (Legislative Branch)
The Town’s courts and judges make up the
judicial branch and they decide what happens to people who do not follow the laws (Judicial)
Locally, who decides if a person broke the law?
a Jury or group of citizens
Local governments are in charge of
police and fire department. They also take care of roads, parks, trash, schools and libraries.
Where do local governments get money for the services they provide?
State and local taxes
Who is the head of the State’s Executive branch?
Governor
Who makes the laws for the State?
State legislature
What important service does the National government provide that the State and Local government can’t?
- They print paper money and make coins
- They run the US Postal Service
- In charge of trade between states and other countries
- Manage National Parks
- Organize an army
Every 10 years, the national government takes a
Census
What is a census?
count of a population that helps decide how much money different communities need
What happens if a local court cannot resolve an issue?
It Moves to State Court, then US Supreme Court
The national government collects taxes on
the money people earn from their jobs (Some states do too, not all)
