Chapter 4 LAB Flashcards
What is the rhomboid fossa and where is it located?
The rhoboid fossa is a diamond shaped structure on the posterior aspect of the brainstem; it makes up the floor of the 4th ventricle.
Where is the tectum of the midbrain?
The tectum is the roof of the cerebral aqueduct.
What are the two structures indicated by the yellow circles?
The middle cerebellar peduncles
Identify the mid-brain, pons, open medulla and closed medullar on a sheep brain
What is the tegmentum?
It is the floor of the cerebral aquedcut
What are the superior and inferior colliculi?
These are elevations on the tectum of the midbrain and dorsal to the cerebral aqueduct. These are really just two bumps on the tectum that lie next to each other. The superior is on top of the inferior.
The red dot on the picture outlines the inferior colliculus
What parts make up the hind brain?
Medulla and Pons
Identify the labeled nerves and structures.
a) Hypoglossal Nerve
b) Pyramid
c) Trigeminal Nerve
d) Basal Pons
e) Oculomotor Nerve
What is the function of the brain stem
Serves as a conduit for innformation between the brain and spinal cord. Gives rise to most of the cranial nerves; contains structures that integrate both visceral and somatic information.
What are folia and fissures?
a) Elevations of the cerebellar cortex
b) Grooves or depressions
Very similar to the sulci and gyri of the cerebrum.
What is the vermis?
The mid-line region of the cerebellum.
What are the hemispheres of the cerebellum?
Region directly lateral to the vermis
What is the cerebellar tonsil?
A rounded lobule on the undersurface of each cerebellar hemisphere
What is tonsillar herniation?
An increase in intracranial pressure can force the cerebellum into the brain stem or the foramen magnum leading to severe cardiovascular consequences.
What is the flocculus?
Structure immidiately inferior to the middle cerebellar peduncle. Involved in motor control
