Chapter 3 LAB Flashcards
What plane is this?
Sagittal Plane (midline)
What does the Sagittal Plane divide?
Divides the CNS into left and right hemispheres
What does the coronal plane divide?
Divides the CNS into anterior and posterior parts
What does the transverse plane divide?
It divides the CNS into superior and inferior parts, similar to looking into a bowl.
In order, name the planes to which these MRI scans correspond
1) Transverse
2) Sagittal
3) Coronal
Dura Mater
Outer-most tough and fibrous portion of the meninges. Similar to a thick flap of skin that surrounds the brain (hides the neural folds and grooves)
Arachnoid Mater
middle layer of the meninges; on the upper half the attached picture. The arachnoid mater is overlyign the sulci.
Pia Mater
Inner-most, delicate and virtually indesinguishible layer to the naked eye. It is adherent to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. It is the lower half of the attached picture.
Epidural Space
The space between the bones of the skull and the dura mater. This is where epidural hematomas occur.
Gyrus and Sulci
Gyri are outward folds of the brain. Sulci are inward grooves.
Longitudinal Fissure
Separates the right and left cerebral hemispheres.
Lateral Sulcus (Sylvian Fissure)
Divides the temporal lobe from the parietal and frontal lobes.
Central Sulcus
Divides the Frontal and Parietal Lobes.
Parietooccipital Sulcus
Nearly vertical sulcus that separates the parietal lobe from the occipital lobe.
Label the coloured regions with the respective lobes
