Q

What does the transverse plane divide?

A

It divides the CNS into superior and inferior parts, similar to looking into a bowl.

Q

Dura Mater

A

Outer-most tough and fibrous portion of the meninges. Similar to a thick flap of skin that surrounds the brain (hides the neural folds and grooves)

Q

Arachnoid Mater

A

middle layer of the meninges; on the upper half the attached picture. The arachnoid mater is overlyign the sulci.

Q

Pia Mater

A

Inner-most, delicate and virtually indesinguishible layer to the naked eye. It is adherent to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. It is the lower half of the attached picture.

9
Q

Epidural Space

A

The space between the bones of the skull and the dura mater. This is where epidural hematomas occur.

Q

Gyrus and Sulci

Q

Indicate the specified letters

A

A) Lateral Fissure

B) Temporal Lobe

C) Longitudinal Fissure

17
Q

What meningeal layer is beinng peeled back by the forceps?

A

Dura Mater

18
Q

What layer(s) are represented on the left side of this picture?

A

The arachnoid mater. This meningeal layer has a characteristic “web-like” appearance. DIrectly below this layer is the Pia Mater

19
Q

Describe rostral, caudal, ventral, and dorsal both with respect to the brain as well as the spinal cord.

A

Rostral means toward the nose (face) while Caudal means toward the tail. Ventral and Dorsal take on different meanings. The human CNS is in a sort of upside down L shape. The outside portion is always dorsal, and the inside portion is always ventral (see picture)
