Chapter 4 - Granulocytic series Flashcards
What is Leukopoiesis?
Production of white blood cells.
What are the three main categories of mature white blood cells
Granulocytes neutrophils eosinophils basophils
monocytes
lymphocytes plasma cells
What do granules contain?
Enzymes that digest and destroy invading organisms
What is the neutrophil maturation sequence?
Myeloblast Promyelocyte Myelocyte Metamyelocyte Band Segmented neutrophil
What are some characteristics of a myeloblast?
14 to 20 µm
2 to 5 nucleoli
no granules
All three granulocytes originate from this
What are some characteristics of a promyelocyte?
15 to 20 µm
nucleus is oval/round
primary granules appear
Myelocyte Characteristics?
10 to 18 µm nucleus is oval but slightly indented at this stage due to granule formation the cell can be Differentiated last stage capable of mitosis production of primary granules stops
What are some characteristics of a metamyelocyte?
10 to 15 µm
no nucleolus present
indentation does not exceed 1/2 the width of the nucleus
not capable of mitosis
What are some characteristics of a band?
9 to 15 µm
horse shoe shaped
What are some characteristics of a segmented neutrophil?
9 to 15 µm ID is based on chromatin
Eosinophil maturation?
Myeloblast Promyelocyte Eosinophilic myelocyte Eosinophilic metamyelocyte Eosinophilic band Eosinophil
Characteristics of an Eosinophil?
10 to 16 µm
bilobed
granules contain histamine
Increase in allergic reactions
Stages in basophilic maturation
Myeloblast promyelocyte basophilic Myelocyte basophilic metamyelocyte basophilic band basophils
Basophils characteristics?
10 to 14 µm
N:C ratio difficult to determine
large purple blue and black granules
play a role in allergic reactions and inflammation granules contain histamine and heparin
The compartments of bone marrow storage?
Miotic pool
maturation storage pool
marginating pool
circulating pool
