Chapter 4 - concepts Flashcards
Avoidance Behavior
A coping strategy where individuals avoid reminders of their trauma, such as specific places, people, or activities. This behavior maintains PTSD by reinforcing fear and preventing the individual from processing the trauma.
Cognitive Restructuring
A cognitive-behavioral therapy technique that helps individuals identify and challenge distorted or maladaptive beliefs, replacing them with more balanced, realistic thoughts.
Negative Appraisals
Dysfunctional interpretations of the trauma or its consequences. Individuals with PTSD often hold excessively negative beliefs, such as thinking they are weak or the world is inherently dangerous.
Disjointed Trauma Memories
Trauma memories that are not fully integrated or processed, often recalled in fragmented and distressing ways, contributing to re-experiencing symptoms.
Prolonged Exposure (PE)
A specific type of TF-CBT that involves repeated exposure to trauma-related memories or stimuli to reduce their emotional impact over time.
