chapter 4: CNS Flashcards
what are the 4 lobes of the cerebrum?
- frontal lobe
- parietal lobe
- temporal lobe
- occipital lobe
what are the functions of the frontal lobe?
voluntary movement, behavior, learning
what are the functions of the parietal lobe?
integrates sensory information
what are the functions of the temporal lobe?
speech, memory (hippocampus)
what are the functions of the occipital lobe?
vision/integrates visual information
what is the cerebral cortex?
the outermost layer of the cerebrum; contains gray matter
what is the corpus callosum?
white matter that connects the cerebrum
what are sulci and gyri?
sulci: divets in brain
gyri: bumps/grooves in brain
what is the function of the cerebellum?
coordinate muscle movement and balance
what portions make up the brainstem?
- pons
- midbrain
- medulla oblongata
- reticular activating system
what are the functions of the brainstem?
control sleep, respiration, swallowing, posture, and thermoregulation
what portions make up the diencephalon?
thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal body/gland
what are the functions of the diencephalon?
receive sensory info from body and distributes info to other parts of the brain
what is CN II?
optic nerve
what is CN X?
vagus nerve (parasympathetic nervous system)
what is CN VIII?
vestibulocochlear nerve (hearing)
where are gray and white matter located in the brain?
gray matter: outside (cell bodies)
white matter: inside (nerve fibers/axon)
where are gray and white matter located in the spinal cord?
gray matter: inside
white matter: outside
what is the spinal cord made of?
ascending/sensory and descending/motor pathways
what are the functions of dorsal horns within the spinal cord?
collect sensory information from peripheral nerve; travel to brain for integration
what are the functions of ventral horns within the spinal cord?
transmit motor impulses to tissue for response
