chapter 1: intro to anat & phys/homeostasis Flashcards
define anatomy
the structure of animal’s body
define physiology
the structure to function relationship
what is the organization of an animal’s body?
- cells: obtain CO2 and produce energy
- tissue
- organs
- systems (collection of organs)
list the different types of tissue
- epithelial tissue (skin/lining of digestive tract)
- connective tissue (tendons)
- muscle tissue (skeletal, cardiac, smooth)
- nervous tissue (neurons)
how is body water compartmentalized?
intracellular fluid (inside cell) and extracellular fluid (outside cell in blood plasma)
what happens if a cell is hypotonic?
cell expands (more water inside cell than outside cell)
what happens if a cell is hypertonic?
cell shrivels (more water outside cell than inside)
define osmolarity
measure of solute concentration in solution (hypotonic, isotonic, hypertonic)
define homeostasis
stable internal environment/state for optimal health
how is homeostasis maintained?
through feedback loops
how does the body respond to a negative feedback loop?
signals the body to “turn off” a response (ex. thermoregulation)
how does the body respond to a positive feedback loop?
signals the body to reinforce a change/continue a response
