Chapter 4 Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
What is the cell theory?
organisms are made of cells, cells are basic unit of life, cells come from cells
What is a plasma membrane?
covers the cell surface, acts as a barrier
What is the cytoplasm?
area between membrane and nucleus
What is cytosol?
the liquid part of cytoplasm, contains ribosomes
What do eukaryotes have that prokaryotes don’t have?
a nucleus
What are eukaryotes?
all organisms except bacteria and archae
What limits a cell’s volume?
its surface area
What is cilia?
short, many hair-like structures
What is flagella?
long, few hair-like structures
What is the difference between plant cells and animal cells?
plant cells have cell wall, vacuoles, and plastids
What did Leeuwenhoek do?
observed living cells
What did Hooke do?
discovered “cells”
What did Virchow do?
concluded that cells come from other cells
What did Schwann do?
discovered animals are made of cells
What did Schleiden do?
discovered plants are made of cells
