Chapter 2 Chemistry of Life Flashcards
What four elements make up about 90% of organisms?
oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen
What does the nucleus contain?
protons and neutrons
What orbits the nucleus?
electrons
What are isotopes?
atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons
What is a covalent bond?
two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
What is an ionic bond?
an attraction between a positive and negative ion
What is activation energy?
The amount of energy needed to start a reaction
What is a reduction reaction?
reactant gains an electron and become negative
What is an oxidation reaction?
reactant loses an electron and becomes positive
What is polarity?
electrons are not shared equally, overall charge is neutral
What is hydrogen bonding?
formed between H atoms and the negative end in other molecules
What pH would be considered acidic?
0
What pH would be considered neutral?
7
What pH would be considered alkaline?
14
Why are buffers important?
neutralizes bases or acids (enzymes work at very specific pH ranges)
