Chapter 4: Assessing Cardiorespiratory Fitness Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is the most important component of physical fitness?
cardiorespiratory endurace
What is cardiorespiratory endurance?
“ability to perform dynamic exercise involving large groups of muscles at mod to high intensity for prolonged periods”
What is VO2 max?
maximum oxygen uptake
What is the most valid measure of functional capacity of the cardiorespiratory system?
VO2 max
What does VO2 max reflect?
capacity of heart, lungs, and blood to deliver oxygen to the working muscles during dynamic exercise
Is a “plateau phenomenon” a prereq for identifying true VO2 max?
No
What is VO2 peak?
the highest rate of oxygen consumption measured during the text (does not necessarily = VO2 max)
What is Absolute VO2?
measured in liters per minute (directly related to body size)
aka just a final value
What is Relative VO2?
used to classify an individual’s cardiorespiratory fitness level or compare fitness (takes various body sizes in account)
aka gives a rating based on body weight
What test should you perform before the state of a vigorous exercise program if they are high risk with s/sxs?
graded maximal test
What test should you perform before the state of a vigorous exercise program if they are low risk?
submaximal test
What are some pros of doing a submaximal testing?
- less costly
- less time-consuming
- still gives reasonable estimate
What are some cons of doing a submaximal test?
- less sensitive as diagnostic tool for heart disease
If VO2 plateau does not appear, what other factors indicate VO2 max?
- failure of HR increase with increase intensity
- venous lactate concentration > 8mmol
- respiratory exchange ratio (RER) > 1.15
- rating of perceived exertion (RPE) > 17
T/F: Maximal exercise tests are no more dangerous than submaximal tests (provided you follow guidelines and correctly monitor)
True
What is moderate intensity on the Borg scale?
12-14
What are RPEs used for?
determine endpoints of GXT
What are some indications for terminating an exercise test?
- angina
- drop in systolic BP from baseline BP despite increase in workload
- excessive rise in BP
- shortness of breath, wheezing, leg cramps, etc.
- change in heart rhythm
- client request to stop
What is a continuous exercise test?
no rest in between work increments
What are discontinuous exercise tests?
the client rests 5-10 minutes between workloads
What is the VO2 max different between cycle ergometer tests and treadmill tests?
VO2 max for cycle was 6%-11% lower than for treadmill
What speed does the client need to go at for the leg and arm ergometry GXT for it to be accurate?
client needs to attain aa steady state during the maximal GXT test
What does the bench stepping maximal GXT need to be adjusted for?
step height and stepping rate for differences in body weight
this makes standardization of the work extremely difficult
What do you monitor during submax tests?
HR BP and PRE
