ASIAN IDENTITY
- Asians stresses personal
orientation rather than task
orientation - The needs of the group is given
priority than for the individual - Modesty, being humble,
generosity, and sharing is
emphasized - East Asian characters can be attributed to
the prevalent influence of Confucianism - The lack of “personality” is traced to the
Confucian social institution of Li-rules of
propriety. - The lack of principled moral thinking is
linked to the dyadic, relation-based
character of the Confucian ethic - Confucian ideal of society
as based on the fulfilment of
duties rather than the
assertion of rights. - In the Southeast Asia, Buddhism and Confucianism have
great influence - We generally don’t like confrontation and rarely show visible
signs of anger. Also, we traditionally valued cool-headedness
BUDDHISM CHARACTER
- Encourages its practitioners to keep their emotions and
passions in check and stresses karma over determination. - One must (1) refrain for taking life, (2) don’t steal, (3) avoid
illicit sexual activity, (4) don’t speak falsely, and, (5) refrain
from consuming inebriating substances. - Humans want many things and want to keep them forever,
which is impossible and creates a constant state of desire,
which in turn causes suffering and fear of further loss
CONFUCIAN CHARACTER
- Confucian values include love
and respect for the family,
integrity, loyalty, humility,
industriousness, commitment
to education, belief in order
and stability, emphasis on
obligations to the community
rather just individual rights - Confucianism is based on morality rather than laws
CONFUCIANISM five cardinal virtues:
- JEN - benevolence in terms of sympathy for others
- YI - duty reflected in shame felt after doing something wrong
- LI - manners, propriety, and deference
- CHIH - wisdom in determining right and wrong
- HSIN - loyalty and good faith
FILIPINO CHARACTER
- Filipinos are particular with
personal and family honour.
We also have strong sense of
family and community - Hiya is instilled within us
even at an early stage - Were also easy-going,
friendly, and hospitable
