What is Adler’s theory?
Individual psychology
Indivual psychology
- The one dynamic force behind people’s behavior is the striving for success or superiority
- People’s subjective perceptions shape their behavior and personality
- Personality is unified and self-consistent
- The value of all human activity must be seen from the viewpoint of social interest
- The self-consistent personality structure develops into a person’s style of life
- Style of life is molded by people’s creative power
Inferiority complex
Stagnation of growth in which difficulties seem too immense to be overcome
Organ inferiority
Compensation for weakness leads to strength
Aggressive drive
experienced as fighting or competition
Masculine protest
Seeking the privilege associated with the male gender role
Superiority striving
Striving to achieve personal best
Perfection stiving
Inherent motivation toward personal growth
Superiority complex
A neurotic belief that one is better than other

A person’s image of the goal of his or her striving
What do we mean with ‘‘Final goal’’
- People strive toward a final goal of either personal superiority or the goal of success for all humankind.
- Set by the time children reach 4 or 5 years of age
What do we mean with ‘‘compensation’’?
We strive to overcome or short-comings, inferiorities of one sort or another
Personal superiority
- Goals are personal and no interest of others
- May be in the form of social interest but motivated by overcompensation
Healthy individuals
- Concerned with goals beyond themselves
- Capable of helping others without demanding or expecting a personal payoff
- Able to see others not as opponents but as people with whom they can cooperate for social benefit
What do we mean with subjective percepeptions?
the manner in which they strive is not shaped by reality but by their subjective perceptions of reality
Organ dialect
The disturbance of one part of the body cannot be viewed in isolation; it affects the entire person.
Two basic methods of striving toward the final goal
Innate striving force ➡️ physical deficiencies ➡️ feelings of inferiority ➡️ Exaggerated feelings ➡️ personal gain ➡️ personal superiority= Final goal dimply perceived
OR

What do we mean with ‘style of life’?
- A person’s goal, self-concept, feelings for others, and attitude toward the world.
