Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is the mass of all atoms compared to and what is this called?
Carbon-12, this is the relative atomic mass.
What is a mass spectrometer used to find?
The relative atomic mass and percentage abundance.
How is the relative atomic mass found?
By using the percentage of each isotope and its abundance.
How is relative molecular mass found?
From the sum of relative atomic masses.
How much does 1 mole contain and what is this called?
23
6.02 x 10 particles. this is called Avogadro’s constant.
How is the number of mole of a substance found?
By dividing the mass of a substance by the molar mass.
What is molar mass and how is it found?
The mass of 1 mole of a substance. It is found by adding the relative atomic masses of the elements making up the substance.
What does percentage composition show?
The percentage of each element present in each compound.
What is the name given to the simplest formula for a substance and what does it do?
Empirical formula. It tells the ratio of elements present.
What does molecular formula show and how can it be found?
It shows the actual number of atoms of each type present in a compound. it can be calculated from the empirical formula and its molar mass.
