Q

Why does electronegativity and first ionization energy increase across a period.

A

Because the core charge (number of protons minus the number of inner electrons) increases. This can be simplified to the number of valence electrons is equal to the core charge.

10
Q

Why does electronegativity and first ionization energy decrease down a group?

A

Because the number of electron shells increases and therefore the influence of the positive nucleus on the negative electrons decreases (the electrons are further from the nucleus).

16
Q

Do metals gain or lose electrons?

A

Lose electrons.

17
Q

How does the reactivity of non-metals change in a group?

A

Decreases down a group.

18
Q

Do non-metals gain or lose electrons?

A

Gain electrons.

19
Q

What is special about noble gasses and their reactivity?

A

They tend to be nonreactive because they have stable outer shells.

20
Q

When do compounds form?

A

When 2 or more elements combine chemically in fixed proportions.

21
Q

When a metal and a non-metal react, what do they have similar properties to?

A

Sodium chloride.

22
Q

When 2 non-metals combine, what do they have similar properties to?

A

Water.
