Chapter 3 Flashcards
What is variation in properties of elements associated with?
The electronic of the atoms.
What is the periodic table divided into?
s, p, d, f blocks.
What in the periodic table displays valence electrons?
Groups (vertical columns) numbered 1-18.
What in the periodic table displays number of shells?
Periods (horizontal rows) numbered 1-7.
What group would i find the alkali metals?
Group 1.
What group would i find the halogens?
Group 17.
What group would i find the noble gasses?
Group 18.
What group would i find the transition elements?
Groups 3-12.
Why does electronegativity and first ionization energy increase across a period.
Because the core charge (number of protons minus the number of inner electrons) increases. This can be simplified to the number of valence electrons is equal to the core charge.
Why does electronegativity and first ionization energy decrease down a group?
Because the number of electron shells increases and therefore the influence of the positive nucleus on the negative electrons decreases (the electrons are further from the nucleus).
Which way does the atomic radius trend go?
Decreases across a period, increases down a group.
Where are metals found on the periodic table?
On the left side.
Where are the non-metals found on the periodic table?
On the right side.
Where are the metalloids found on the periodic table?
Beneath the staircase that divides metals and non-metals.
How does the reactivity of metals change in a group?
Increases down a group due to a change in atomic size.
