Chapter 4 Flashcards
Splices
1
Q
When are splices desirable?
A
- To make a permanent eye in the end of a rope
- Permanently join two ends of the same size and type of rope togther
2
Q
When installed correctly, splices are ______________?
A
Almost as strong as the rope itself, whereas a knot can significantly reduce the strength of the rope.
3
Q
Properties of an Eye Splice?
A
- “Side Splice” - because the end of the rope is spliced back into the side of itself
- 95% Efficient
- Can be strengthened by adding a thimble to the eye
4
Q
What are OSHA’s requirement for eye splices in Synthetic Fiber Rope?
A
Synthetic Fiber Rope eye splices must have at least 4 full tucks
5
Q
What are the properties of a Short Splice?
A
- 90% Efficient
- Should be avoided if the rope is to pass through a block, especially when heavy strain is involved
- Used to join the ends of two identical ropes together or to remove damaged portion of the rope
- “Butt Splice” - Ends of the two ropes are butted together
6
Q
When should a Short Splice be used?
A
When maximum strength is needed and the rope will not pass through a pulley
7
Q
What are OSHA’s requirements for Short Splices in Synthetic Fiber Rope?
A
- Must have at least 8 full tucks, 4 on each side of the centerline.
- Rope under 1” in diameter the strand tails must project at least 6 rope diameters beyond the last full tuck, or taper them and add two additional full tucks
- Ropes larger than 1” in diameter, tails must project at least 6”, or tapered and tucked two additional full tucks
8
Q
Properties of Back Splice?
A
- “Crown Splice” or “Crown Knot”
- Serves to prevent rope end from fraying
- OSHA has no regulations on this splice, but should be made with 4 full tucks for consistency
