Behavioral orientations that people can take toward a conflict: avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, collaboration
avoidance “lose lose”
low level of concern for their own interests and others interests, low level of activeness, low disclosiveness, low flexibility
variations of avoidance
protecting, smoothing, withdrawing
protecting
avoiding conflict at all costs (denial) (hiding)
smoothing
smooth people’s emotions, making sure everyone feels okay with the problem existing, but the conflict will go on, not resolving the problem
withdrawing
Withdrawing from the situation and maintaining neutrality (not addressing it)
accommodation “Lose win”
high concern for others, low concern for self, highly flexible, low activeness, low disclosiveness
variations of accommodation
yielding, conceding
yielding
accommodating the other side completely, not regard for one’s own interests)
conceding
give in a little bit for the other side, but the interest is still in for the outcome of the other person)
competition “Win Lose”
high concern for self, low concern for others; bid for control can breed aggression
variations of competition
forcing, contending
forcing
(one side being very inflexible, trying to dominate a conflict)
contending
(being more flexible than forcing, but just to the point where you know you won’t lose)
passive aggression
when a communicator expresses dissatisfaction in a dismissed manner, tactics designed to punish another person without direct confrontation
