when conflict is recognized by the parties
felt conflict
where the conflict changes one party’s feelings for the other; becomes emotionally charged and has feelings like anxiety, mistrust, or hostility
manifest conflict
when parties act on the perceived/felt differences
aftermath
where new relationships and arrangements are formed due to how the manifest conflict is handled; parties assess their outcomes whether they are positive or negative
Rummel five stage
latent, initiation, open conflict, balance of power, disruption
initiation stage
triggering events cause the parties to act; where the potential differences become the basis for conflict
open conflict
confront the issues before them as they try to reach some sort of settlement; Assess each others capabilities and willingness to use force, threats, and rewards; sometimes engage in attack and defense
balance of power
come to understand the consequences of the resolution and learn to live with the outcome
disruption stage
Parties realize that circumstances are ripe once again for the emergence of potential conflict and eventual confrontation if a new triggering event occurs
stage models of negotiation
distributive bargaining stage , problem solving, vision making
distributive bargaining
Parties test the feasibility of possible demands, establish criteria for appropriate settlements, asses power of each side, and evaluate the strength of each sides case; Here Parties see themselves fulfilling their roles as representatives of a “side” in the negotiations, lastly their building a plan on how to try to get through the conflict
problem solving
the parties explore a range of solutions that might satisfy the criteria established at the beginning of the conflict. There might be some maneuvering by both parties, but the main point of this stage is to focus on establishing a working relationship. ; This is completed by proposing, and evaluating solutions that identify the problems in the relationship
decision making
Parties come to an agreement on some terms and explore the outcomes of their decisions. ; Reality checking is the focus seeing how this will change life now. And assessing the state and implementation of terms that both parties can see and follow
