What’s the difference between civil rights and civil liberties?
-civil rights: rights of a group
-civil liberties: rights of the individual
What is symbolic speech?
Actions that convey a message (not verbal communication)
What three court cases deal with symbolic speech?

-United States vs O’Brien (1966)
-Texas vs Johnson
What is probable cause?
A reasonable belief that a person committed a crime. An officer needs to have probable cause to make an arrest, conduct a search, or obtain a warrant
What is self incrimination?
Accusing yourself of a crime that you can be prosecuted for
What court case deals with self incrimination?
-Miranda vs Arizona (1966)
-Fifth amendment requires police to inform suspects of their right to shut up
What is plea bargaining?
-A deal to take a lesser sentence rather than going to trial
-“No contest” means you are taking a plea deal without actually admitting to the crime
