Chapter 4 Flashcards
What are the three measurable dimensions of behaviour?
- Repeatability
- Temporal extent
- Temporal locus
What is repeatability?
Also called countability, meaning the behaviour can be counted.
What is temporal extent?
The duration of behaviour can be measured.
What is temporal locus?
When the behaviour occurs in time.
Why do we measure behaviours?
accountability, optimize effectiveness, ensure progress, maintain ethical standards
What can we count? (based on repeatability?)
Count - tally of occurrences
Frequency - number per unit of time
Celeration - how rates of response change over time
What types of measurement are based on temporal extent?
Duration
What types of measures are based on temporal locus?
Response latency - measure of elapsed time between onset of stimulus and initiation of next response
and
Interresponse time - amount of time between two consecutive instances of a response class
Describe topography
the physical form or shape of a behaviour; can be measured
Describe how magnitude can be measured?
refers to the force or intensity of a response
What is event recording?
Different ways to record the number of times that a behaviour of interest occurs.
Describe time sampling.
a variety of methods for observing and recording behaviour during intervals or at specific moments in time.
Whole-Interval Recording
watch for the whole interval (ie. 15 seconds) and at the end of the interval write down whether the behaviour occurred throughout the entire interval
Partial-Interval Recording
records whether the behaviour occurred at any time during the interval
Momentary Time Sampling
record if the behaviour is occurring at the moment the interval ends
