ABCs of attitudes
Affect, Behavior, Cognition (all interrelated)
Implicit bias
Unconscious attitudes and biasses that affect our behaviors without our awareness.
Theory of planned behavior
Asking people about their intention to do a certain behavior increases the likelihood that they’ll do it.
Roles
The actions expected of those who occupy a certain position.
Cognitive dissonance
A feeling of disconnect between belief and action that must be ameliorated.
Insufficient justification
When someone can’t justify their actions based on external stimuli.
Self-presentation theory
For superficial reasons, we express attitudes that make us appear consistent.
Self-perception theory
Our actions are what reveal our beliefs to ourselves.
Self-justification
We must justify our actions to ourselves by internalizing beliefs about them when there is insufficient external justification.
Over justification effect
When an external reward reduces a person’s internal motivation to accomplish something.
Implicit Association Test
Uses reaction times to see how quickly people associate concepts.
