Matching support
The stress-support matching model suggests that only when the support serves the appropriate function in the person’s life, will the relevant stress be buffered.
Benefits of marriage
Marriage is a social relationship that can buffer all kinds of stress.
Quality of marriage
The quality of a spouses support is more important than their availability. Those in happy romantic marriages are happier (less depressed) over all.
Functional support
Functional measures are the measures which assess the extent to which relationships serve certain functions.
Structural support
Structural measures are the measures which describe the existence of relationships (the structure of the support).
Tangible support
Also known as instrumental aid, tangible support. Is actually helping people to solve the problem that is causing stress, either by resolving the problem itself or providing help that allows the person more free time.
Emotional support
Also known as esteem support, letting someone know they are esteemed and accepted. Letting people know they are valued and accepted no matter what.
Belonging support
Social companionship, spending meaningful recreational time with others.
Informational support
Advice, appraisal support, cognitive guidance. It is help with defining and understanding and coping with problematic events.
Buffering model of support
More social support is less stressful because the social support intervenes to make things less stressful and reduce the likelihood of psychopathology.
Main effects model of support
More social support is less stressful because it provides consistent reliable positive experiences.
