elements of nvc that are fixed or do not change during interaction (give an example)
Proxemics
The study of space and distance in communication convey how much control, connection, or comfort there is in a relationship (give an example)
Kinesics
The movements of the face and body that take during an interaction. (give an example)
Facial expressions
Deintersification: lessened intensity of an emotional display
Overintensification: Increased intensity of an emotional display
Neutralization: non-existent display of emotion
Masking: Emotional display is the opposite of what is shown
Artifacts
Physical adornments and accessories in one’s possession that are temporary and removable (give an example)

Both interactant looking at each other
Vocalics
characteristics that provide information about how verbal communication should be interpreted. (pitch, volume, rate and silence)

The study of the specific nonverbal behavior involving touch

- Formality - formal vs informal
- Warmth - a warm and welcoming environment
- Privacy - the extent to which an environment is perceived as secluded
- Familiarity - the extent to which one environment is perceived as known and comfortable
- Constraints - the extent to which an environment is perceived as restricting movement (uncomfortable)
- Distance - The extent to which an environment is perceived as enabling a person to be near or from another person or object
Territoriality (concept from lecture)
the establishment of space that people claim for their personal use:
Primary territory - space you own and have control
Secondary territory - place you regularly come
Public territory - space open to everyone but available to yo temporarily
