chapter 4 Flashcards
what is critical appraisal of a research?
in-depth review of how each step of the research was undertaken
why is critical appraisal important?
it helps distinguish good evidence from unreliable evidence and unbiased evidence from biased evidence
what should nurses be careful of in terms of research?
nurses should NOT accept research at face value.
need skills to determine the strengths and limitations of both quantitative and qualitative research when reviewing the available literature on a topic
what are the THREE evidence necessary to integrate into decision making?
1) systematic inquiry (research aka external evidence as PRIMARY basis for clinical decision)
2) practitioners expertise - fill gaps and combine external evidence with practice based evidence aka internal evidence to result in aesthetically knowledge
3). patient’s choices and concerns
true or false? all 3 are needed to make a decision in terms of evidence based practice?
TRUE. each alone is NOT sufficient
what are the 3 areas we use to grade the strength of evidence?
1) quality (critical appraisal) i.e., sample size, variables, measurements
2) quantity - number of studies conducted on the issue to confirm the evidence
3) consistency - similar findings across various design
what is internal evidence generated by?
quality improvement which focus on improving practice
what do you get when you combine internal and external evidence?
The PDSA cycle

what internal evidence is used to track outcomes in canada?
Canadian institute of health information
