chapter #4 Flashcards
Masters and Johnson’s four-phase sexual response model
found that the physiological response of men and women to sexual stimulation are quite alike.
- excitement phase: characterized by erection in the male and vaginal lubrication in the female.
- Plateau phase: is an advanced state of arousal that precedes orgasm
- orgasmic phase: characterized by orgasmic contractions in pelvic musculature. In males occur in two stages of muscular contractions, In females is manifested by contractions of the pelvic muscles surrounded the vaginal barrel.
- resolution phase: the body returns to its pre-aroused state.
Kaplan and Basson models of sexual response
Three stage model of sexual response:
1. desire
2. excitement
3.orgasm
This model makes it more convenient for clinicians to classify and treat sexual dysfunctions
Basson suggested that for women, intimacy plays a key role in sexual response.
Anaphrodisiacs vs antidepressants
have the opposite effect and decrease sexual response
may also impair erectile response and delay ejaculation in men and orgasmic responsiveness in women.
What were Marijuana findings in terms of sex
facilitates sexual desires and hightens sexual pleasure among some women, and can do the same in men but may hinder erectile functioning, is date dependent
What were freud’s two types of orgasms in women
clitoral and vaginal
Sexual wellness for people with disabilities and all people involve 5 factors

aphrodisiac effects of psychoactive drugs
such as alcohol and cocaine
may reflect our expectation of them or their effects on sexual inhibitions rather than their direct stimulation of sexual responses.
Role of the brain in sexual response
the brain plays a central role in sexual functioning
the cerebral cortex interprets sensory information as sexual turn-ons or turn-offs
Cerebral Palsy (CP)
does not usually impair sexual interest, capacity for orgasm, or fertility but people with CP may be limited to certain types of sexual activity and positions.
