Chapter 39: Light Flashcards
Give examples of light being converted to other forms
Photosynthesis: light energy is changed to chemical energy in growing plants.
Solar cells: light energy to electrical energy.
Why are shadows formed?
Light travels in straight lines. Light cannot pass through certain materials, such as opaque materials
How fast does light travel?
300 000 000 metres in one second
What’s the difference between luminous and non luminous objects?
Luminous objects make and give their own light while non luminous objects reflect light from another source.
What is dispersion of light?
The separating of light into its different colours
Explain the term laterally inverted
Laterally inverted is when you look into a plane mirror and the left side is on the right and the right side is on the left
What is the purpose of the periscope?
The main purpose of the periscope is to see over objects
What is refraction of light?
Refraction of light is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another
What type of glass is the magnifying glass?
Converging lens or convex lens
What part of white light is refracted most by a triangular prism?
Blue/indigo
Name a natural phenomenon that produces a band of coloured light from sunlight
A rainbow
Give the colour of light that can be seen at the extreme ends
Red and violet
Name 2 renewable energy sources, excluding sunlight that are available in Ireland
Wind and tidal energy
