Chapter 34: Force Flashcards
What is the unit to measure force?
Newtons
What can a force do?
Can move a stationary object
Can cause a moving object to move more quickly, morse slowly or to change direction
What does the force of gravity do?
If a pen rolls over the edge of the table, it falls to the ground, because the earth pulls objects towards it
What does magnetic force do?
It attracts metal objects eg a paper clip
Example of an electric force
When you rub a plastic pen against the sleeve of your juniper, you can lift small pieces of paper as the pen has become electrically charged
What is friction?
A force that opposed the sliding motion of an object when in contact with another object
What is lubrication used for?
To reduce the friction between two objects in contact
Example of friction
When you pull the brake handle on your bike the friction between the wheel and the brake pad causes the bicycle to move more slowly
Three advantages of friction
When driving a car around a corner friction is needed
Needed to stop a bicycle
Gives you grip on your feet while you walk
Three disadvantages of friction
When you go for a long walk, friction can cause a blister on your foot
Friction wastes fuel in your car
It can make a knife blunt
What unit is mass measured in?
Grams (g) or Kilograms (kg)
What unit is weight measured in?
Newtons (N)
How do you convert mass to weight?
By multiplying the mass by 10
What happens as objects rise above the ground?
The pulling force of the earth (gravity) decreases therefore the object becomes lighter
Does mass have a direction?
No
