Chapter 39 Flashcards
The adrenal cortex synthesizes three classes of steroids:
- the glucocorticoids, (fasciculata)
- Mineralocorticoids (glomerulosa)
- the androgens (reticularis)
main glycocorticoid
cortisol
main mineralocorticoid
aldosterone
Hypothalamus secretes —- anterior pituitary gland secretes —- and adrenal cortex secretes —–
CRH, ACTH, cortisol
stimulates the synthesis and release of adrenocortical hormones
ACTH
have
- metabolic effects
- anti-inflammatory effects
- immunosuppressive
glucocorticoids
synthetic glucocorticoids
bextamethasone, dexmethasone, prednisone, hydrocortisone and cortisone
due to glucocorticoid excess
cushings syndrome
acts on the kidneys, sodium reabsorption and high urinary excretion of potassium and hydrogen
aldosterone
adrenal insufficiency due to negative feedback, replacement therapy is needed
addisions disease
administration of exogenous steroid can cause a decrease in the production of endogenous steroids
adrenal suppresion
taken orally for replacement therapy, for shock and asthma, topically for eczema and enemas
hydrocortisone
most used orally in inflammation and allergic diseases
prednisolone
very potent, no salt retaining properties
betamethasone and dexamethasone
glucorticoid antagonist (abortion pill)
mifephstone
