chapter 38: biotechnology and agriculture Flashcards
What are the different hypothesis for the shift from hunting to gathering?
- changes in climate
- reduced wild food sources - greater population density
- increased food demand - overhunting
- led to decline of wild prey populations - changing technology
- would’ve made agriculture more viable lifestyle.
What is argriculture?
cultivation of food and goods through farming
What is crop domestication?
process of artificially selecting plants to increase suitability to humans
What are the features of domestication syndrome?
- loss of dispersal
- increase in size
- loss of seed dormancy
- loss of chemical/mechanical protection
What is hybridization?
Common in nature, used to introduce new genes.
What are mutations?
Can arise spontaneously or can be induced.
What are beneficial mutations?
They are mutations used in breeding experiments
What is done to desirable traits?
They can be introduced to different species.
What are the two meanings of biotechnology?
- innovations in use of plants to make useful products
- GM organisms in agriculture and industry
What does transgenic mean?
organisms that are engineered to express a gene from another species
What did GMO and GMP increase worldwide?
quality and quantity of nutrition
Transgenic crops are developed to do what?
- produce Bt toxin to defend against insect pests
- tolerate herbicides
- resists specific diseases
What are two examples of nutritional quality improvements?
- golden rice: vitamin A deficiency
- Cassara: increase levels of iron and beta-carotene
