Chapter 36 Inspecting and Testing Welds Flashcards
What is a flaw or discontinuity?
It is a part of a weld that is not perfect.
An imperfection in a weld
What is a defect?
A defect is a flaw that makes a weld unsuitable for the job it is intended to perform
The code or specification determines how large a flaw can be before it becomes a defect. In some codes a crack _________ long may be acceptable.
1/32”
What is the difference between a nondestructive examination (NDE) and a destructive test?
NDE- does not damage the weld or base metal
destructive testing - results in at least some damage to the weld
What is the most typical type of nondestructive examination (NDE)?
visual exam
What is a penetrant examination?
It is a good means of locating surface flaws. It cannot locate flaws that are inside a weld however, this test used a liquid dye usually red in colour for good visibility of the surface flaw. Fluorescent liquid glows a light green colour and shows the surface flaw.
What is the magnetic particle examination (MT)?
It is used to locate the flaw that are at or very near the surface of the weld. Flaws that are deeper within the weld cannot be found using this test. Also this test can only be used on material that are magnetic.
What is the ultrasonic examination (UT)?
Can be used on all metals to locate internal flaws. Sound waves are sent into the part being inspected. They travel until they contact air or am internal flaw and are reflected back creating a echo.
What is a radiographic examination (RT)?
It is a two-dimensional internal examination method. Two types of radiation can be used to produce radiographic gamma rays and x-rays.
What is a tension test?
It is a destructive test that applies a tensile stretching or pulling load to a prepared sample until it breaks.
What is tensile strength?
It is a measurement of the amount of force required to pull the metal apart.
What is ductility?
A measurement of how much the metal stretches before breaking.
What is the bend test?
It is used to evaluate the quality and the ductility of a completed weld. The guided bend test is the most common type.
What are the three classifications of bend tests?
- The face bend- The weld face is on the outside of the bend
- The root bend- Has the weld root side of a weld on the outside of the bend
- The side bend- Is used on material that is thicker than 3/8”
What is a transverse sample?
A test sample in which the weld runs across the sample
