Chapter 33 Key notes Flashcards
What is the Threshold limit value (TLV)?
The TLV is the point at which a hazardous material/WMD begins to affect a person
What is the IDLH?
Immediately dangerous to life and health
What does IDLH mean?
It means that an atmospheric concentration of a toxic, corrosive, or asphyxiant substance poses an immediate or delayed threat to life
What are the 3 IDLH types?
Toxic, flammable, oxygen deficent
What is one of the first actions responders must take at a hazardous materials/WMD incident?
Isolation of the hazard area
What is a TIC?
Thermal Imaging camera
What are TIC’s used for?
They allow a responder to estimate how much material remains in a container
What is concentration?
Concentration is expressed as a percentage of how much of the acid or base is dissolved in a solution
What are the three response objectives?
Offensive, Defensive, Non-intervention
What is Offensive operations?
Responders take action to mitigate the Issue, they take place in the hot zone typically
What are Defensive operations?
defensive actions take place outside of the hot zone or some distance away from the point of release
What is Non-intervention?
Nonintervention occurs when the hazard of entering the hot zone it too great or for some reason allowing the incident to self-stabilize
What is NFPA 1994?
It is Standard for protective ensembles for first responders to CBRN terrorism incidents (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear)
What is High-temperature-protective equipment?
It is the level above the structural fire fighters ensemble It shields the wearer during short-term exposures to high temperatures
What is Level A Chemical protective clothing?
The Level A ensemble consists of a fully encapsulating garment that completely envelops both the wearer and the respiratory protection, gloves, boots, and communications equipment
