Chapter 3.2 - Water Flashcards
1
Q
What elements make up water?
A
Hydrogen and oxygen
- 2 hydrogen atoms and one water atom
2
Q
How are the atoms in water molecules bonded?
A
Covalently
3
Q
Why is water a polar molecule?
A
- Oxygen has a higher electronegativity than hydrogen
- As a result it attracts the shared pair of electrons in the bond closer to itself
- This creates regions of positive and negative charge
- Oxygen has a partially negative charge
- Hydrogen has a partially positive charge
- Causes the unsymmetrical bent shape of water
4
Q
What are hydrogen bonds?
A
Bonds that form between the positive and negatively charged regions of adjacent water molecules as a result of the polarity of water
