Q

Why is water a polar molecule?

A
  • Oxygen has a higher electronegativity than hydrogen
  • As a result it attracts the shared pair of electrons in the bond closer to itself
  • This creates regions of positive and negative charge
  • Oxygen has a partially negative charge
  • Hydrogen has a partially positive charge
  • Causes the unsymmetrical bent shape of water

Q

What are hydrogen bonds?

A

Bonds that form between the positive and negatively charged regions of adjacent water molecules as a result of the polarity of water
