Chapter 31 - Organic Synthesis and Analysis Flashcards

Q

Why do chemists aim to design processes which do not require a solvent?

A

They aim to make solventless processes because solvents decrease the concentration of the reactants, meaning the rate of reaction is reduced compared to what it would be, as well as having to pay for a reactant

Q

Why do chemists aim to design methods with fewer steps and higher atom economies?

A

Fewer steps mean less loss of products between reaction vessels, as well as fewer by-products and side reaction which decreases yield, the same with lower atom economies which means less profit
